Chocolate Crinkle at New Seasons

New Seasons Market
Various Locations (this one purchased at Concordia store)
99¢

I have been inside this store anywhere between 4 and 10 times/week (really) since it first opened in my neighborhood – over 10 years ago. Which makes it somewhat shocking that the first time this cookie made its way into my mouth was about 2 months ago.

It just looked…uninviting, I guess. I’ve had a longtime love for  the triple chocolate at Grand Central – not to mention several other cookies that fall under this general umbrella of double/triple chocolateyness. So you’d think I would’ve been all over this one like white on rice.

Oatmeal Raisin at Grand Central Bakery

Grand Central Bakery
Various locations – Portland and Seattle
$1.65

Quite awhile ago I told you about the oatmeal raisin at New Seasons Market, a cookie that is baked on site at the New Seasons bakery –  from dough made by Grand Central Bakery.

The oatmeal raisin at New Seasons, however, is not the same oatmeal raisin cookie that you will find at an actual Grand Central Bakery. They are both very respectable versions of the oatmeal raisin category (one of my all time favorites, in case this isn’t obvious by now), but the one that Grand Central makes for their own bakeries wins my vote for 1st place between the two. I guess it only makes sense that Grand Central would send out their star player under their own brand. Sort of like Gap vs. Old Navy?  Maybe not quite, but…something like that.

Grand Central Bakery
Portland* – various locations

$1.30

As I typed the words “Triple Chocolate” just now, I realized that I’m not really sure why it’s called “triple”.  Rich chocolate base: check. Nice semi-sweet chocolate chips: check.  But…what is this mystery third chocolate in the trifecta?  (Note to self: Next time you go to Grand Central, ask what that damn third chocolate is.  Shit, now I’m totally curious! Stay tuned for an update.)

Okay, so here is what’s interesting about the this one:  Every time I taste it, I am surprised all over again by how honestly delicious it is. That is to say, it does not have a whole lot of curb appeal; it appears somewhat dry and biscuit-y to the eye, and even though I’ve eaten probably twenty of them over the past, say,  5 years, it is as if I’ve developed some sort of chronic Triple Chocolate Cookie amnesia.
