Chocolate Chip Cookie at The Slanted Door

The Slanted Door cookie kiosk
Ferry Building Marketplace- San Francisco
$1

Note: I found this cookie NOT in the actual Slanted Door restaurant, but instead just outside of it, amongst the kiosks in the main hallway of the Ferry Building Marketplace. I’m not sure whether this a regular Slanted Door cookie stand or if it exists only occasionally. Looks like I assed-out with the information-gathering on this one. Sorry guys.

I was with my mom on a short visit to S.F. last week and by the time I found this nugget last Saturday, we’d walked probably 5 miles and tasted about 4 other cookies in the Ferry Building/farmers’ – all of them before noon. The day before that, we’d tasted about 3 others in the city. This was the most remarkable of the bunch.

Almond Biscotti at Roman Candle Baking Co.

Roman Candle Baking Co.
3377 SE Division St. – Portland
$1

This is the second time I’m talking to you about biscotti. (The first was just last month.)

Note: I should actually say from Roman Candle, not at. I found these biscotti  at Case Study Coffee on NE Sandy  — along with a solid lineup of other RC pastries. I’ve never actually seen it at Roman Candle because their pastry case was close to empty 9 out of the approximately 10 times I’ve been there -despite the fact that it was nowhere near closing time on any of those visits. (This is one of my beefs with RC – but I won’t get into that now.)

Amaretto Cookie at Bluebird Bakers

Bluebird Bakers
2390 NW Thurman – Portland
$2

Man, have I been on some kind of an almond jag lately. I made marzipan for the first time a couple of weeks ago (so much easier than I realized). I also bought a Bakeshop almond croissant at Extracto Coffeehouse last week, and anyone who knows me knows that this is far off of my beaten pastry path. Not sure what’s happening in my head and mouth, but something in there is telling me it needs to eat almond paste.

Toasted Pecan Shortbread at Roman Candle

Roman Candle Baking Co.
3377 SE Division – Portland
$1

There were three different flavors of shortbread cookies sitting in the case when I went in to pick up a loaf of my favorite bread the other day (actually, a quarter of a loaf of my favorite bread. Yeah, they sell quarter loaves – it’s a massive and dense loaf to begin with). Big points for RC for that.

I’m not typically shortbread-leaning, but these were all compelling. Polenta pisatchio (I might be making up the pistachio part), and…oh damn. I’ve already forgotten the other one, but it looked good, too.

When I finally settled on the toasted pecan, the very patient (and cute) young man at the counter smiled and told me it was his favorite. And though I haven’t tasted the others, he knows what he’s talking about. This is a really good shortbread cookie.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip at Laughing Planet

Laughing Planet Café
7 locations in Portland (and a couple in Eugene and Corvallis)
$2

I’m sorry to say that I’ve overlooked this cookie for a long time. Truthfully, the only reason I ever even go to Laughing Planet is to grab the Hempseed Carob Hazelnut, probably the most unlikely cookie on my list of favorites. I’ve told you about this one. I’ve mentioned that there is no logical reason for me to love this cookie; it has hemp, it has carob,it has hazelnuts (not my favorite nut). Oh yeah, and it’s a little bit over-baked. I can’t explain or justify its credibility, all I know is that it is oddly compelling.
