Bakery Bar
2935 NE Glisan St – Portland
$1.50

Ever since Bakery Bar inexplicably stopped making their soft, excellent ginger cookies a few years ago, I haven’t been able to get excited about a cookie at this joint. (The bakery’s  strength, imo, is savory and sweet scones  -maple bacon and apple, cinnamon pecan, sharp cheddar and scallion, etc –  and their breakfast menu. And cakes, which I’ve never actually tasted but are exceptionally cute and beautiful.)

I ate this cookie at least 3 weeks ago and I’m still thinking about it. Like, daily.  And really hoping that it wasn’t a one-off fluke of a cookie. They absolutely need to keep this one in the regular lineup because it is remarkably good.

• Doughy, with crisp edges. (I mean…check out that cross section. Gorgeously doughy.)

• Great dark chocolate bits – not too big, evenly dispersed throughout.

• Currants – the size of these, as opposed to raisins, are consistent with the size of the chocolate bits

• Toasted pecans. These were unadvertised on the sign. Bad news if you hate nuts, a nice bonus if you do. Extra points for splurging on the superior pecan instead of mouth-ouchy walnuts.  Small pieces to match the chocolate and currants.

• Orange zest. I love orange with currants and I love orange with chocolate. All three together = delightful.

This is a thoughtfully-conceived and well-executed cookie.

And I want one in my mouth again.
