Courier Coffee Roasters
923 SW Oak – Portland
$1

This is a cakey chocolate chip cookie for sure – something I don’t usually scream (in a good way) about. BUT… because top notch ingredients are so clearly at play – including deep, complex chocolate and no shortage of dark brown sugar and good butter – it’s kind of hard to go wrong here. In other words, it’s a good cookie and I don’t see how anyone could say that it isn’t – no matter your ccc leanings.

Note: it’s not cakey in a dry way; I guess I’m mostly reacting to the fact that there is nothing remotely doughy and underdone (qualities I adore and pursue) or thin and chewy (which I also dig).  The crisp edges give way to a center that is toothsome, heavy with a toffee-like brown sugariness, and studded with aforementioned chocolate chunks. The cookie would only be better if salt was used throughout the dough rather than (or in addition to) simply being sprinkled into one tiny dime-sized area on top. I was, however, somewhat successful in relocating the surface salt into my individual bites. I’m resourceful like that.

Courier bakes these on site in small batches.  I’m pretty sure they put out just one batch per day – and when they’re gone, they’re gone.

Also: did you catch the price?  $1 for a (really good) cookie?  Love that.  (Take note, cookie highway robbers!)
