Hideaway Bakery
3377 East Amazon Dr., Eugene, OR

I found this bakery only 4 years ago while visiting Eugene (my hometown), and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been around more than a couple of years longer than that. In a town with more (way above average) bakeries per capita than anywhere I’ve lived, The Hideaway is the one I make the biggest point of hitting when I’m in town. After I’ve gotten my pumpkin cookie with brown sugar icing fix at Sweet Life. (I will never get tired of the pumpkin cookie with brown sugar icing at Sweet Life.)
Hideaway does a great job covering a wide range of pastry styles: homey/Saturday Market-y stuff like molasses cookies, pumpkin spelt bread (sooo moist and good), pleasingly lumpy scones both savory and sweet, vegan and non vegan. Banana bread and plump bran muffins. Crazy moist-looking layer cake (carrot, dark, dark chocolate, lemon chiffon) fill the refrigerated case. But also represented are all sorts of laminated dough pastries: fruit turnovers, pain au chocolat, orange hazelnut pinwheels, almond bear claws…
And pizza.
The reason I’ve spent the first two paragraphs talking about everything other than the cookies is because, to be honest, the cookies are not my favorite thing to eat here. Don’t get me wrong, they are certainly not bad. I have no complaints with these cookies and would buy them again. Let me restate this: they are good cookies. It’s just that I kinda like the pumpkin bread and muffins and cake and tarts so much that the cookies aren’t my first pick when I’m at The Hideaway!
But if it’s a cookie you’re after, you have my blessing with this one:
Oats, semi sweet chocolate, dried cranberries. No nuts. Not too floury/cakey, allowing for a chewier, flatter (but not too flat) situation. And it’s big – as the penny-for-scale in the top photo indicates. I’m not usually looking for chocolate in my oatmeal cookies, but for the raisin haters , this is a solid bet.
